Kansas city jazz singers8/13/2023 ![]() ![]() This revolving ensemble assembled in 2018, and I am endlessly grateful. This Kansas City musicians list includes both bands and solo artists. Kansas City jazz has inspired the creation of a museum and has been the subject of a feature-length film, Robert Altmans 1996 'Kansas City,' and even a sentimental rock song, 'Eternal Kansas City' by Van Morrison. She was known professionally as Kay Starr, and was one of the most successful pop and jazz singers in the late 1940s and 1950s. Jazz is exciting, creative, intuitive and in-the-moment! Singing jazz has allowed me to be part of something greater than myself, and it’s what I love most of all. Kay Starr Catherine Laverne Starks was born in Oklahoma in 1922. Each gig has been an education, the same song is new each time it’s played, and every musician brings their own unique expression to the sound. Family, friends and a handful of early venues supported and hired me from the start, a cumulative effect that launched my gigging circuit faster than I ever dreamed possible. They’ve gently instructed, challenged me with new material, and trusted me to do my best. So many have been instrumental in helping me develop my repertoire and confidence. I am grateful to every musician I’ve worked with during this journey. I don't know that I could ever replicate the serendipitous series of events that led me here, but performing jazz has been the greatest gift and source of joy in my life. Toward the end of my twenties, fear of regret became greater than my fear of what people might think and in an effort to send a spark out into the universe, I answered an online ad from a jazz group seeking a singer. Located in the 18th and Vine Jazz District, this inexpensive museum showcases the citys. Despite cherished time in high school choir, singing in family weddings and sorority events and folk duo nights in college, music largely remained a quiet part of my life. I spent car rides to school singing three-part harmonies with my mom and sister, summers in Michigan with my musical cousins where Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bobby Darin sang cocktail standards from my Grandmother’s record player. As a baby, I sang melodies from my crib with babbled words. Kansas Citys jazz legends like Charlie Parker played with local musicians like Big L, aka LaVerne Barker. As an accounting graduate of KU, I decided to pursue singing nearly 8 years into my business career though singing has been there all along. I’ve lived in Kansas City all my life, however I’m only a few years acquainted with the music and jazz community here. ![]()
